As a little kid wandering around the boat drag pits I remember always hearing how fast a boat was, not how quick. My cousin ran the 95-100 MPH class in the 60's. Two boats would idle up to a guy on a float and if boats were lined up (close but not perfect) when they got to him he dropped the flag, if not they circled around and tried again.

My question is when did they start using lights, rolling starts and keeping track of the time, not just speed?

Am I the oldest guy here?
Nobody wants to even guess?
Maybe my memory is going and there was starting lights.
Naw, there was a guy on a float, no lights.

My Gosh its Brad!

How have you been doing Brad? Good I hope. I really do not know when the lights came about. I am just curious. I would guess early to mid 70's.

By the way I am going to put on an old farts convention and I was hoping you could be the guest speaker!rofl

We could talk about rocking chair upgrades or how to cover up when you forget to zip up after the restroom, or how to slow down dribbles from the corner of the mouth or.....

What the hell, I forgot what I was talking about........

Nice to hear from you Brad (I just turned up my hearing aid)

I started racing circle jets in 1971 for a couple of years and best I can remember they started using timing lights in 1973 in the TX area.

Thanks Jerry,
So I guess I am right about they were going for speed, not time.

My first race was in March 72', NDBA Spring Opener, Long Beach Marine Stadium. They had lights, recorded ET and MPH. At the time, unlike today, qualifying was determined by speed (MPH), not ET. Boats made singles during qualifying, as they could only record the speed and ET of one boat. On race day, only the winners received an ET and MPH.
