Junkie,

The "Nitro Fever" BFH was owned by Rick Hendrick (of NASCAR fame) and obviously driven by Jimmy Wright until his untimely death at the wheel of this same boat.  Below is a excerpt of some information found at www.nascar.com:

Rick Hendrick has always been a "car guy," learning to build automobiles and engines as a young man with his father, "Papa Joe," on the family farm near the small town of South Hill, Va.

That passion led Hendrick into the world of motor sports, where he quickly made a name for himself by setting records at a local drag strip as a 14-year-old with a self-built 1931 Chevrolet. The following year, he won the Virginia division of the Chrysler-Plymouth Troubleshooting Engine Building Contest at just 15.

Hendrick also was a standout high-school athlete who briefly flirted with professional baseball before pursuing academic opportunities at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., where he participated in a work-study program with Westinghouse Electric Company.

While in Raleigh, Hendrick's automotive passion led him to open a small used-car lot that proved to be a successful business venture. His efforts soon caught the attention of a large dealer, who quickly named him general sales manager at the age of 23.

In 1976, the then-25-year-old purchased a struggling Chevrolet dealership in Bennetsville, S.C., dramatically increasing sales and eventually turning it into the most profitable franchise in the area.

That success was the precursor to the Hendrick Automotive Group, now consisting of more than 60 dealerships and 4,700 employees from the Carolinas to California. After modest beginnings, the company currently nets revenues of more than $2 billion annually.

Hendrick was equally successful in the world of motor sports, founding a drag-boat racing team that won three consecutive national championships (1981-1983) and set a world record at 222.2 mph with the boat "Nitro Fever."

One year later in 1984, Hendrick Motorsports was born, fielding a single team in the prestigious NASCAR Winston Cup Series that earned three victories and three pole positions as "All-Star Racing" with driver Geoff Bodine.

Today, the organization is headquartered at a 62-acre, state-of-the-art facility in Charlotte, N.C., and fields five full-time teams in two different NASCAR divisions.

In all, Hendrick Motorsports has garnered five Cup championships, three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series titles and one NASCAR Busch Series crown, making it one of stock-car racing's premier organizations.

Hendrick is just the second team owner in NASCAR's modern era to earn more than 100 Cup Series victories.

Success on and off the track has given Hendrick the opportunity to come to the aid of those in need, supporting and founding multiple charitable endeavors. In 1997, he chartered the Hendrick Marrow Program, an initiative to help raise money for tissue typing and support for those suffering from leukemia and other blood-related diseases.

A member of the board of directors of The Marrow Foundation, Hendrick takes a very personal approach to the cause after being diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 1996, currently in remission.

Now 54, Hendrick lives with his wife Linda in Charlotte, overseeing his business interests and offering his time to other causes whenever possible.

One of five dealers to be selected for the national planning committee for General Motors' Saturn Division, he also served on the GM President's Dealer Advisory Council and has taken on various roles with auto manufacturers. In 1990, he even helped NASCAR "Go Hollywood" as a technical advisor on the motion picture "Days of Thunder," starring Tom Cruise.

Although Hendrick has built a successful empire and gained global recognition for his efforts on and off the track,

Padgett,
I've seen a couple of photo's lately that have rekindled a interest in this boat. Jimmy Wright was killed driving the Nitro Fever boat? If so did the boat survive?  You mentioned that your dad {Gordon} bought the whole operation , did this include the boat{hull}. If so, do you know where it is today?

I have some old photos of Nitro Fever as well.  They are a little rough because they were taken before I got my 35mm.  I apologize for not posting some right now (they aren't that accessible right now).  A little more about Jimmy...After winning the 1980 ADBA hi points championship in Blown Alcohol Hydro, he stepped into Nitro Fever in 1981.  In London, Ontario in 1981 he set the record at 208.33 mph, pretty much in the dark.  It was awesome to say the least.  Later that year Eddie hill took the record in High Point at 210.28.  Those two were constantly one-upping each other.  I think the next bump was to 213 (I'm not sure because I'm going by memory.)
I should have the exact speeds and times as well, when I dig up the photos.  I know I have one with Jimmy (holding Chico - he loved that dog!), Eddie Hill, and Jimmy's son Mike.  When I get to them, I'll post them.

Alright, after thinking about it, I had to dig up something.  So here is the stats on September 12, 1982 or Jimmy Wright Day, which ever you prefer.  Jimmy had the first-round bye and ran a 6.63 @ 213.77, while Billy Vance in Ambush ran a 6.25 @ 206.42 to beat Lou Osman in Speed Sport Special with a 6.87 @ 165.74.  The final round was the last race of the day.  After Final Effort beat Oilfield Trash in the BAH final (thought Padgett might like the plug), Jimmy and Billy ran.  Jimmy was in the outside lane, and won the race.  The ET's are not in the notebook (they might be in the ADBA newsletter - I'll try to find that , too)  but the speeds were.  Billy ran a 208.33 and Jimmy ran a 214.79.  It was strange to see the doctors boat head down track, because nothing appeared to be wrong.  When the news came back, it was shocking and devastating.  The pits seemed completely silent.

Bass,
Thanks for posting the picture of Jimmy Wright. They've been real hard to come by. I also liked the other pics. you posted in the 70's -80's BFH topic. That's my favorite era of Drag Boats. Jimmy Wright,
Kenny West,Brad and Dexter Tuttle, Eddie Hill , Billy Todd and Dave Nolte. It's hard to believe it's been 20 years this month that Dave Nolte was killed in the Liberty boat.

damn ... i'm old ..... 20 years ago !
it was a very hot , long ride home that weekend, liberty was one of my group of friends favorite boats ..... outside lane against a youngster named Ron B. i still recall how many times the paramedics stopped from the edge of the water to the helicopter attempting to keep him with us ..... standing on the edge of the bank near the island at berenda .... i have never forgotten that scene.

Hey Guys,

It's been almost two years since I posted this thread. Still looking for Nitro Fever pictures. Rob still interested if you've been able to get to your pics. Here a few I have from cut outs and the old scrap book.

Guys,

Here's another cut out from a poster. Boat was originally Blood, Sweat and Nitro. Rick Hendrick bought her and renamed her Nitro Fever.
