Quit whining Jeff, at least by bribing them with $5 certificates, you finally got one or two people to actually take a look at your non-racing POS!

Just kidding bro...we'll see you in beautiful downtown Red Bluff in a couple of weeks.  Curt has a special bottle of your favorite fuel, if you've recovered from the last one.

Considering the tentative June 7th date is only four weeks out; not enough time to properly promote the venue and have a fair chance to make revenue, the other weekends in June don’t make good choices either, do to it being Father’s Day and other events occurring the weekends of 14th, 21st and 28th.
A proposal to the table would be to postpone the race until maybe August 23rd, two weeks after the Marble Falls race and inline for San Diego Race. Yes this would be a back to back race for the CDBA racers but... probally their first! (I did not check the history books so if I am wrong don't clobber me!!!)
The water in Brendella Resovour is there for something like 90 days which could work out and the City and who ever would have adequate time to get their P’s & Q’s together and make it work for all interest! JIMO!

I just found out that the water is not scheduled to be released into the reservoir until the third week of June according to the City of Chowchilla.

The date would have to be changed if and when they did come to an agreement

Hey Gary, from what I understand the terminology is: "the farmers will not have water released to them until the 3rd week in June which is around the 17th".
The reservoir is filled prior to release, however in the sake of having a race there is no question at this point it should be moved to another date. There is not enough time to market the race to make is profitable or deal with all other logistics.
Everyone needs to take the personal out and look at it as a business… your business and ask themselves if it was your investment as a promoter, what would you do to raise your chance to break even or make profit at this point?
Please note we encourage everyone to add your suggestions to this subject.

Liam,

You made 9 post and all with a negative gesture, how about stating how you really feel...

Do you not think or feel promoters don't make a profit?

Look forward to reading your opinion.

Mr. Sims

I dont think that a profit is made at most boat races, If there was a profit made there would still be a race in Gadsen, along with some other lost venus,If there was a signifacant profit to be made I feel there would be more races.

Profit "ISN'T" a dirty word....Lord knows it's what keeps everybody going from day to day. That is unless you buy hi, sell low, and front to your friends....

Lets keep the positive thoughts going so we have a successful race. Lets face it, Jeff needs to get his boat on the water at least twice this year....

Duane,

If this race was a winner financially, dont you think Ali would be all over it like a bum on a baloney sandwich? There are minimal spectators that attend the race. 5000 people through the door in 2 days is not gonna make anyone rich. Not after you pay IHBA 35k to bring their show and then pay all of the other expenses. The people that make the money on this race are the Hotels, restaurants, grocery stores and gas stations. THAT'S IT!!  I have owned my own business and I can honestly tell you that I never looked to TRY to lose money. The marketing, advertising and hand shaking for this deal to work has to be year round for it to even have a chance. I guarantee if ALI thought it was a winner he would be involved.

All of our pleading to the city of Chowchilla is probably not doing anyone any good. Each member of the board is gonna ask themselves how it is benefitting "them" personally. The best thing to do is find who makes the ultimate YES or NO decision and grease that palm directly.

5.2: Boat Drag Races – Outcome of Event (Hibdon)

Interim Director Hibdon gave a brief recap on the Boat Drag Race event. He explained that the event sold out and went very well. The promoter, Chowchilla Police Department and Lions Club, all were very helpful in putting together this event which had a positive outcome.

Administrator Red informed the committee that the promoter that worked with the Lions Club is a very knowledgeable promoter. Administrator Red also noted that the Reservoir is open to these kinds of events in the future – utilizing both reservoir water as well as the land surrounding it. She asked the committee if there were any objection to these kinds of future events. She explained that some of the events would be Sand Drags – which would provide many benefits to the Reservoir area, for example it would irrigate the sand which is good for both the surrounding land and the water.

Chairman Twitty asked if the Water District has been contacted  regarding such events. Administrator Red explained that the Water District should not have a problem with more events taking place at the reservoir, as long as there is enough water present. The Parks and Recreation Commission seemed very interested in the idea of researching more about those kinds of events. Commissioner Seals pointed out that these kinds of events would be great for the City of Chowchilla as a whole since there is a lot of interest, in the Valley for
extreme motor sports.

Commissioner Seals asked if these events will be coordinated with the Lions Club as well. Administrator Red said that she does not know, but that the Lions Club is the local service group so they would be a great contact when planning these kinds of events.
========================================================

This was from last years minutes from the city council meeting, notice where it says "the event was sold out and very successful".  You can't say you did not make any money if you where able to donate money to other charitable organizations.

My point prior is using the "Water" as an excuss for not having or moving the venue not about if it was profitable.

Any venue is a risk, promoter take the risk to make a profit. Unfortunatly there are to many who want to dip into a promoters profits and in Chowchilla this seems to be a larger issues of pockets that want to be padded.

If you remove all the pockets and leave it to being just the City and an Association with the ample time to promote the venue it could be profitable. What they do with the revenue afterwards is up to them. However don't give it all away and say I did not make any money!

I looked here http://www.ci.chowchilla.ca.us/agenda.htm for the minutes from the last meeting and did not see them posted yet. Howerver I did see where the East Bay Boat Club wants to hold their annual cicle race in July and a motion to approve was voted unanimously by voice vote.

Nothing on the drag boat race, which doesn't look good.

Here is what baffles me. The event "Sold Out'? What does that mean? Did they only allow a certain amount of people? Did they run out of spectator room? I was at each race that has been put on in Chowchilla the past 8 years. In the last three years the spectator count has been dismal. Last year, Fegan himself was taking tickets at the gate. This tells me that he was cutting things extremely thin. There was not much security, Im not bagging on Fegan Im just pointing out what the scenario has been the last few years. I do know that Ali chose to not promote the Chowchilla race again because it was a loser financially. Chowchilla has always been a favorite place of mine to race. The water is fast and the pits are great. It is just out in the middle of nowhere and that makes it tough to market. Howard Jaquith fought his ass off to make it work and couldnt and he is a local.

My Honest Opinion is:

1) City says they are interested to help but wants Lions and IHBA to work things out.
2) Lions claim to be looking for another promoter,( They have already exhausted 2 promoters and went direct as a last resort)

So, If the city drags this along, IHBA will forced to either cancel or reschedule due to the time line.
It makes no difference when water will be available. IHBA has been asking the city for guidence ever since they(IHBA) rec'd the cancellation letter back in Jan. of 08. (This I know for a fact because this is when I got involved) The city administrator keeps promising that they will help. But things keep dragging on. Now another meeting?

Bottom line, Force everything onto IHBA, make IHBA adjust the schedule, cancel or what ever, but protect a service club who in past years has been a big donater, never mind that this club has reduced their doantions in the past few years, never mind that there are other service clubs in the community who would take this project on and excel, never mind that the police dept's 2 fund raisers, that the this service club used to headlined has been given to other service clubs.
I feel that someone/something is saying foul, and blackmailing the city into a foot dragging situation.

I had stated in an earlier post that there may not be a race at all this year. I am beginning to feel this way even more now.

I feel that the local businesses do not have a say or the power to persuade, but a service club does. Maybe the local businesses should stop paying their city taxes and advise the city that if it wants their tax $, then go to the service club and demand it from them as they kept the businesses from having an opportunity earn it.

I am very disappointed at this juncture of the situation. I have run the gamut, I do not know what else to do. I guess more letters, and phone calls to the council members. (I doubt it will help) What's that old saying "You cant buck City Hall"?

I wish all you well, and maybe there will be a race later in the year (I doubt it) or next year.

Well said Bob! This is what small town politics is all about. The funny thing is that it may not be about money, maybe somebody got hurt because they feel that they are not getting their butt kissed enough. I really hope the race happens, but I'm thinking that the IHBA should get in touch with the Indian tribe that's putting the casino in Madera and see if they might be willing to put in a "watersports complex" where they could hold drag boat races, waterski competitions, & whatever else comes to mind. Granted, I don't know the logistics of building something like this, it's just an idea.
