I can't remember the boats or drivers, it was definatley the slowest ET's laid down by a fueler.  But both drivers broke, and climbed out onto the deck and paddled to break the beams.  I think one driver had a paddle and the other pulled off a shin guard.  If anyone has a picture of this please bring it to Phoenix, I would love to have a copy.  Heck bring 2 copies and give one to the RESP auction on Sat.

If I rememebr right they were blown gassers. One was Mike Gilday in Shattered Image and the other was Rich Hayes in Fire Water.

HangFin,

Do you know any photographers that have been around since back then?  I would love to buy a copy of a pic of that for my living room.

True-dat! Hang Fin.

They disqualified both racers for not crossing the finish line under power. It was the largest roar from the crowd I have ever heard.

Rich Hayes had his shin guard off and was paddling like hell. And Big Mike was right there with him. Surely someone should have been rewarded the win after all that effort. I never did figure out the rule, they both left the starting line under power but lifted the blowers around half track. Rich's " on Fire Water " was pretty regular with that.

Hey Eddie,

Didn't someone back in the day try to break the starting beam with spark plugs out of the motor on the starter motor and declare they were under power?
