What most people underestimate is how much more it takes to pick up 4 tenths in the 1000' course it is equvilent to .528 sec in 1320' - 1320/1000=1.32 1.32X.4=5.28 you really have to add serious HP to pick up that much ET. |

Bear, when the air was good and we were able to run a a 7.80 or so pass, and the 1/8th mile time was 4.2+-, but as I said before it was an 8.0 bracket boat, and consistency won me a lot of races.

Typing too quick (yea right) in the equation I ended up with 5.28 should be .528! |

At Pine Bluff, Dixie ran a single and I just happened to pick up the extra time slip, just to study. He ran 7.832 @ 1320, 7.182 @ 1188, 6.211 @ 1000 and 4.432 @ 660. Based on these 5 data points, you should be able to extrapolate other points. Different boats will run differently and I’m guessing that sandbaggers have an advantage. I’m also guessing that if you don’t cut a light, you just as well forget it.

Sam, for estimating purposes that is good logic, however, for $10,000.00 cash money that would not thave made the 6 second show at Malvern, Steve ran a 6.24 second and is in the slow half of the second chance 6 second bracket, tough competetion isn't it.

Just talked to Tim Connelly he did not qualify. He is already back in St. Louis! Robert Leas is in the 6 class his brother Roger got in the 24th spot because last years winner, Donnie Little broke and went home. Randy Johnson is the 24th boat in the 7's. Bump in the 7's was apparently a 7.0 something for the top 16! That's all I have heard. I WILL BE BACK TO SMITC NEXT YEAR! It ****ed bad being home this year. |

138.462 is correct. I'm guessing that the way the MPH works is strictly looking at 5 sensors, 1 starting beam, 2 660, 3 1000, 4 1188, and 5 1320. I'm also guessing that there is usually a sensor at around 528 feet to determine 1/8 mile MPH but that sensor was moved to 1000 feet so racers could prepare for SITC. On this run, MPH 1-2 is 101.534, 2-3 is 130.308, 3-4 is 132.010, 4-5 is 138.462. That would be the average speed between each set of sensors. OK, so is this what you did? Convert the distance traveled into miles (divide by 5280) and then divide that by the time converted into hours (divide by 3600) to get MPH? That would mean that Feet traveled X 0.68182 / seconds it took to travel that distance would calculate MPH. I guess thats the way the program works, huh?

Tony Anderson has advanced to second round and Wesley Ice has advanced in 8 second, Travis Tuttle is still in it and the Pugh Hydro outboard just put Tim Ollah on the trailer, Garry held up the phone while several of them were running and I got my heart thumping a little faster if I could have gotten a sniff of the fuel my day would be made.

thanks for the updates guys! I know my grandpa's 1/8 is very very quick compared to most PE's....he consistantly runs 4.2's and I have seen him run 4.0's a few times. Thats whats leaving me confused...I figured a 1000 foot course would be more to his advantage. Oh well, there is always next year! Was 16 all that was takin out there????? I know thats what it was in years past but i thought this year they were gonna take 32??? Anyone know? |

Ricky, they have 16 in the 6 sec. class and the next 8, I believe, in the second chance race in each class, I will check on that and let you know.

Ricky here it is from the SMITC website; Smokin' NEWS! Welcome to the 18th annual Smokin’ in the Cove E.T. Drag Boat Race. Thanks to racers like you, the event has grown every year. We appreciate your efforts to attend this event, some of you travel hundreds of miles and some over thousands. I am looking forward to seeing and visiting with each of you and your families. Now for the change in 2003- the 10 second class has been dropped- a second chance 8 or consolation 8 has been added. In the driver’s meeting 2002 I announced that the winning prize for the 6 second class would be $15,000.00. I have since slept on my announcement, also had conversations with other officials, racers, sponsors etc. We decided to spread the purse. – 24 boats in each class will qualify for Sunday’s race –

bp, I was on the phone with Garry and he is on his way back to Texas, all I know is Travis Tuttle put Tony Anderson out in the 7 second class, outboard Mirage Quartermaster beat the Blown Gas Cole Flat Right before we lost the connection he said Larry Morton got put out by the Little Pugh Hydro outboard, with the bad phone service,I think that is what I heard. Yes Jimmy Tim was very late in running with the outboard. Glad to see him back on the water.

Sam: There are several way to get to the answer but my old mind always remembers that to go 1 mph you have to cover 1.4666666 feet per second. MPH traps are 132' apart. The boat covered the distance in 0.650 Seconds. Divide the distance by the time taken and divide by 1.4666666 will equal the MPH. 132/0.650/1.466666=138.46154mph the system rounds to 3 digits right of the decimal point hence 138.462 |

Gary, it is dark and when it gets dark in Arkansas, there is no phone service, or that seems to be the case, my contact is back in Texas somewhere, so we are at a loss until Benson or somebody calls in.

Team Lake Rat had a great time at the Cove this weekend. We were happy to qualify fifth in our first time. Not happy with a red light in the second round, especially when we were the only boat to run the number that round without breaking out (9.04). The old Mantra really liked the 1000 foot course. Scott and his crew do an excellent job on this race. The organization is first rate. The ramp crews are professional, a real boon for any crewman and tow truck driver. They got us loaded on the first try every time in less than a minute. The lake is beautiful, the town turns out in force for the event. The local high school at Magnet Cove brought all the kids down on Friday from school to the races to catch the qualifying. Congrats to all who made the show. The nine second class required a .110 or better to qualify. Desperado had a .092 in the 7 second class and got bumped out. Thats how close all the classes were thbis year. Lots of really quick outboards showed up too. More than I've ever seen at any one race. Congrats to the few who won. You definitely earned it.

Yeppers! Seat is still in the Boat (he's straped in) He had to change his shorts though . I've watched this Boat run for 4 or 5 years, he is a top notch driver! (He has won 3-World championships, Been Top points champ for 4-years in a row. And he has a real good chance at being it again this year). That boat has never done anything like that before! It is always Straight and true! Never even bobbles!!!! I bet it was the prop work they had done before SITC and did not get to test it first! After We changed props and it stayed straight & true and Ran 6.64 and the last pass before motor blew (100' before the finish line), he was neck and neck with a 6.02! He'll be back!
