Golden Nugget Automotive owner Mike Schiller in his shop in 2005. Gardnerville businessman Mike Schiller was seriously injured in a vehicle accident in the Johnson Lane area late Friday night.

Schiller, who owns Golden Nugget Automotive and is a driving force behind the recent Big Mama's Car Show, was ejected from a Shelby Cobra when the vehicle went off Kayne Avenue, which links Johnson Lane with Stephanie Way. It was a single vehicle accident, and Schiller was the only occupant.

He lives one street over on Clapham Lane.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred at 10:20 p.m. Schiller suffered critical facial injuries and possibly a broken left arm and left leg.

He was taken by CareFlight to Renown Regional Medical Center where he is in the intensive care unit.

Schiller is a former world champion IHBA drag boat racer, and his repair shop has been named best of Carson Valley by residents.

Family and friends of injured mechanic Mike Schiller have set up a bank account and established a Caring Bridge Web site to offer updated information on his condition.

On Tuesday, Ron Schiller asked residents to pray for his 54-year-old brother. He said Mike Schiller was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery but it would take a long time.

“He's making progress,” Ron Schiller said. “But how that's measured is the question. We're asking for prayers. Prayers will help us all get through us.”

Schiller, 54, was critically injured Friday in a 10:20 p.m. accident on Kayne Avenue in Johnson Lane. He was ejected from a Shelby Cobra when he lost control of the car.

He suffered serious head and facial injuries and a broken arm and leg.

Family members said Schiller is in a medically induced coma. They are requesting no visitors or telephone calls, but invited well-wishers to leave messages on the Web site.

Ron Schiller said the family plans to keep the popular auto shop open while his brother recovers.

“We'll keep it until he gets well,” he said. “It's overwhelming how important he is to the community.”

DETAILS

An account to help Mike Schiller and his family with expenses has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank. Donations can be made to account No. 955 302 2099.

Hes recovering very nicely, its definitly great to know that he knows who i am and can understand what im saying when i talk to him. He Has a couple of surgeries planned in the next few days. I told him he has tons of support from friends and family. Hes got all kinds of pictures of his boat all over his room. Played some Motley Crue for him yesterday, but he got to excited. i dont think the nurses realize that they are dealing with the toughest son of a bitch ive ever known haha. Some of my friends setup a caring bridge account, just type carring bridge.com and mike schiller, it will be updated as well. Thank you so much all of you for your support.

I got the surprise of my life Sat when my phone rang I picked it up it was Mike of all people. He sounded real good. It was so nice to hear him talk I almost started crying. He said he is in a rehab center in Reno and the staff there is treating him real good. He still has a long recovery to go but I was amazed by this phone call. If anyone is in the area he is allowed visitors.

Please keep all the prayers going. They are working
