My friend, my mentor, my hero! It is with a heavy heart that I write this. For 25 years our friendship has meant so much to me. Although we are so far apart, we regulary chatted on the phone and I treasured the time we spent together at your house when we visited you and Phyllis. You have been my idol and my tutor. Since we first met at Phoneix back in 1984 we become great mates. My first race boat was named after your 'Illusion' and when we met you accepted me into your family. The laughs, the trips to the races with you and Phyllis, the friends I've since met, have been because of you Don. You went out the way you would have wanted, in your beloved drag boat, and now reunited with Jim, you can talk about the all the good times together again at last. You are a legend Don, my legend and my hero. I will miss you but know you will be watching over me in my boat. God speed Don! Phyllis in you are in our hearts and our thought at this time. Our hearts are broken.......Gary & Kathy James Australia. |

Phyllis, you have been a Saint to the dragboatracing community. You and Don are the most beloved people in this sport. That is a lifetime accomplishment that most of us can only hope to achieve. For this reason, I know you will find peace. Godbless. Scottyb and Kristen Burrows |

Truly, this is heartbreaking news. I had the honor of spending almost a year teamed up with Don & Phyllis and came to respect and admire them both. Don’s passion for the flats was truly great and I always remember that Jim was along for the ride with him. This sport lost one of the greats. Godspeed Don, you will be missed. Jason & Charlene White

I used to live across the street from Don's Mother, Lorraine. I remember the first time she told me both her son‘s raced really fast boats, She referred to Don, as My Don. She said with great pride, “ My Don is The World Champion,” It wasn’t long before I got to meet her Don and his beautiful wife Phyllis. I found them to be just as wonderful as Lorraine had told me. Next thing I knew I was going to the races. Wow what a rush. It was great fun with great friends. I got to meet a lot of really nice people, and was able to see close up the fuel that burned the fire in both Don and Phyllis’ hearts. They were truly a team. They worked together, and played together. They were really the best of friends. The Perfect Couple. I admired that. Phyllis you are in my thoughts and prayers. I am here if you need anything at all. God Bless. Karen Lenfestey

We here in nor cal are very sad over the untimely passing of what we like to call the "godfather of dragboats" don ermshar was a big part of why we wanted to dragboat race! In the few short years we have been racing{smuggler rr#533}don has shared many words of his wisdom to my brother and I and we will never forget that! We would like to send or thoughts and best wishes to the whole ermshar family. |
