Thousands of drag boat racers and fans will flock to Hot Spring County this week to take part or witness the Twenty-Third Annual Smokin’ In The Cove on Lake Catherine at Remmel Dam Landing.

The race began without much fanfare, as race founder Glen Brashears freely admits the race began as sort of an “outlaw event” that included fishing boats and party barges that were mainly just fooling around with their boats in a cove off the main body of Lake Catherine.

It progressed to a race that was limited to boats powered by outboard engines and in the late 1990s was opened up to include boats powered by automobile engines.

Korbie Brashears basically grew up helping to get the boats from the launching ramp to the starting line, standing in waist-deep water to assist in that project.
Brashears, the son of founder Glen Brashears, will see his first action as a drag boat pilot this weekend.

Brashears will pilot the “Bionic Bananna” this week, a bright yellow Evinrude-powered outboard.

this was my first time at the cove, and i have to say it was the best race i've ever attended.   i've never seen such a high level of competition so deep in numbers.    glen brashears and scott seastrom do an awesome job.  the ramp people were unbelievable.  glen came by our pit maybe 15 times over the weekend.   hicks, bandy and i were pitted next to big ed, who we visited with a lot over the weekend - it was great seeing him take that final.
there were 36 boats in the 8's, with the bump ending at .06.  the bump for 2nd chance was .09.  since i'd never run 1k before, although i was upset with myself for not making the field, i was pretty happy to play on sunday and actually end up with a little dough.

this was like bracket racer heaven, and i can't wait to go back next year.  i even talked a bit with 372 while we were on the outramp rope; i suggested we just agree to disagree on some issues.  it was a 3000 mile drive, but worth every minute of it.
