Hi, Im new to this site, Im new to this sport so bare with me. I've been in the racing scene for a while but nothing like this, so any info if greatly appreciated. I recently purchased a 1974 sanger shovelnose with a 1971 429. The motor is to have between 5 to 600 hp. It has a casale v with the 12degree pitch. This has not been in the water since 1995. The motor was last started 3 to 4 yrs. ago. It is set up (old school) what I mean is for instance the fuel system has 2 fuel pumps on it. One mechanical and one electric which basically feeds the mechanical since the motor was starving for fuel on the top end.(This I know needs to be changed) The other is Im not real knowledgable about the water cooling system. It has a set of bassett racing headers which is cooled by water lines, and there is a spicket valve in line to adjust how much water to feed these headers(its like turning on the outside water hose on and off on your house). I know to much water will get in my heads, and not enough will blue the headers, So what is the best way of setting this cooling system up? Thats it for now any help is appreciated and if you have pics of your set-up please post so I can see how it should be done. <!-- / message --> |

they are great boats but i may be partial. i think the main reason they went away is they trap to much air at high speed. the pickle is more stabile. ive also been told that they are a handful slowing down over 140. just my opinion |

Hello, shovelnose, and welcome to the site.
Here are a couple of options that I would look at.
- I would remove both fuel pumps and buy a Berry Grant electric fuel pump. Berry Grant "BG280 or a BG400" would feed your 500 to 600 HP. (No problem)
- I would remove the water lines, in to your headers if your going to be only drag racing. Then maybe think about getting them coated with a ceramic coating on the inside of your pipes. I did my header and the drop in temperature was unreal. Within 5 minutes or less after a run you could touch the headers and not leave skin.
I would make the cooling only to the motor. I run a pump, so I have a pressure regulator in line with the pump and only supply around 12 pound of pressure, to my engine and have never had an issue.
Everyone on the site is great, and I'm sure you will have lots of help.
Welcome to the site, and have fun.

thanks for the help guys, I plan on a fuel pump for the carb, but I am only going to cruz the boat and not race it. I'm sure i will get into it here and there, but I probably will not drag the boat. So for the cooling lines I would like to run them the most efficent way possible without any problems. I'm trying to post pics on here but im having trouble, I can get them to download to the site but how do I attach them? Thanks again. |

Very interesting!!! Looks like it's in pretty descent shape!!! I personally would go to a 1/4 turn valve for the water to the headers but that's just me!! Makes it easier to shut it off if you want to make a pass. Anyhow, I'm sure your questions will get answered here. Don't be shy!! Vince

thats a sweet shovel. sanger built a ton of great boats. i think the water through the headers is just a pain. it doesn't cool them that much but if you are going to be running around some cops then it's a must. it's a legal thing. i say ditch the water lines to the headers all together and jet coat the suckers. just my two cents. cool boat though |
