Sorry, I have another stupid newbie question about drivelines and V drive degree. My hull is a Fineline XH1. I plan to start in the Comp Eliminator class after a few slower dial in runs and hopefully keep moving up, Someday I would like to run Pro Mod. There is no drive line, strut or V drive in the hull right now, so I have a fresh start. I noticed that the V Drives I have looked at come in 10 & 12 degrees. Is one preferable to another for hydros? How do I determine what degree on the V drive I need? Since I will be buying all new drive hardware, I was told I by one person I should get a 1 1/4" shaft and another told me no more then I need right now. Should I just go for the 1 1/4" now while I'm putting everything together? I have a BBC that will be going into it after a little more massaging, maybe 600hp or so.

Dan the 1-1/8 shaft will be plenty big enough going up to the PE class.  There are plenty of racers out there with spare stuff for that setup at the races.  Buy a 10 degree v-drive there should be a good number of used units out there but beware of buying used.  If you plan on keeping the fineline and within a few years moving up to PM by adding a capsule then start out with 1 1/4 all the way so you don't spend you dollars twice the difference now is not that much between the two.  You can contact either Joe Shelfo on this site or RBR at 909-886-3298 for parts as needed.  Good Luck

Thanks, Mills! That was just the kind of advice I was looking for. It sounds like I need to decide if or when I move up to Pro Mod someday, whether I should keep the Fineline or buy a new hull. From what I have read, it would probably cost as much to retrofit the Fineline with a capsule as it would to buy a good used bull ready for Pro Mod.

any legal ready to race capsule boat is a steal at any price under 20,000 dollars . It will cost 10,000 minimum to put one in and then you need all the cables ,air system, air controls, etc then you need paint.  With all that said just buy my boat and be done with it. A fineline is a great boat

Dan,

I have owned the original Fineline XH-1 mold since 1992.  I have built many from Top Alcohol Hydro to Bracket Boats. The capsule I manufacture is built to fit the Fineline hull with only cutting down the cockpit deck to fit it in the boat.  If you have any questions with the set up I have detailed files on the boats I have built. The typical V-drive location for your hull is 102", the flatter you keep the V-drive angle, the lower the engine will be in the boat, so a 8 or 10 degree v-drive would be the better choice.  Between the 8 & 10 degree the availibility of gears for the 10 makes it a better choice. Again if I can answer any questions for you, call me @ 775-849-0701.

Thanks Rob for sharing your support!

Dan if I was you I would be on the phone calling Rob ASAP, you can't get any more assistance than from the man who builds the boats and capsules.

JIM BENSON IN HOT BLOODED, AND THE STAR WARS BOAT WAS WHAT SOLD ME ON THE HULL   AND THE LATER YEARS WHEN ANIMAL CAME OUT THAT WAS A NICE LOOKING BOAT.   XH-1 WOULD BE MY BOAT OF CHOICE IF RAN PRO-MOD.  I WOULD WANT AN ORIGINAL SO I HAVE THE HIGH DECK AND SIDE FINSyeah scool

Rob,
Thanks for all your time tonight, it was great talking to you! If I remember half of what you told me, I'll be way ahead of my game! If you click my link to my website, my email address is on the bottom.

PADGETT,
Thanks, I agree with you, I love the lines on the Fineline XH1, it does kind of remind me of an X Wing fighter from Star Wars! lol Was there really a fine Line named Star Wars? I would like to see a pic of that if you have one!
