My notes say Bill Place was behind the wheel in that picture of the Going Places. Could be wrong though.
Also my notes say Bill Henderson in the Rated X. Not sure if that is right or not either.

Here's another guess who. Special thanks to Admin for fixing up the upload capabilities. We need drivers name and boat name, to win the beer prize, circa 1970's |

I have boxes of photos from my dads boats , Sangers and Brendella, Hondo boats . His boats were Jokers Wild, White Mist, Shakey.. Oakland is bout 15 mins from where we lived in Moraga at that time. I can pull out the pics and records and reel movies. Back when i was still in diapers, Blown Fuel Flat Bottoms were a wild ride. I remember him blowing up motors and running to local Mopar dealer and buying a few Cudas and Chargers and Challengers scrapping the whole car except for motors.
What a waste to toss out the classics like that. LOL |

Gentlemen,
I just came across all of this good stuff. My father is Gail Remy. He is alive and well today. However, that pic of Crucifier with the green on it and the driver in a yellow suit is I believe the late Matt Culbert. (photo reposted here). There were many Crucifiers so the confusion is understandable. Gail Remy drove several of them.
Gail Remy never drove the Crucifier when it was black and gold WITH GREEN. Gail set his record in the black and gold Crucifier III which immediately preceded this one (UFH). This is the same hull I believe. See photo of Gail below.
The only blown Crucifier Gail ever drove was the blue tone (and final, I believe) Crucifier, a BAH. I believe that was also named Crucifier III. I believe Vern Kinman never advanced the number past III though the boats were destroyed and replaced.
Gail's last run was taken on Firebird Lake in Phoenix. On start up at the line, he turned and primed the blower and fired it up. The blower spit back fuel and fire and soaked and ignited him. He jumped into the lake to put himself out, got back in the boat, ran the course and won. The opponent contested the entire event to no end.
Gail built the first hydro he ever drove (Amen #250 UFH). After setting his record, he was asked by many to drive their boats. He drove quite a few over his career. Sexation (don't recall owner or class), Gary Peacock's Badlands
(he thinks it was a Howard hull) BGH, Dave Norton's Firewater BFH,
Tommy Archibald's Californian BFH, and many of Vern Kinman's Crucifiers
(no fewer than three of them - all of which were destroyed by someone
else). |

Matt Culbert drove Vern Kinsman's last Crucifier Blown Alcohol Hydro at Long Beach in 1980. Tipped it over going down to the starting line. I will try to dig up a better picture of this crash. I was pretty unorganized back in the 80"s. But this picture did make the front page of the paper on monday morning. This particular pic I scanned from the Photographer's Forum best of College Photography Annual in 1981. I cannot seem to find the negatives on this sequence, but they are in my office somewhere..... I also did not know that he had passed on. When did this happen? |

I use to work for Clayton Culp who owned Clay and Kens Mobil and was wondering if anyone had some pics of the Califonrnia Heat Wave I and II. More interested in the flat bottom. Spent alot of time waxing that boat and would love to have a pic of it. Use to go with Clay and kick butt on the Kings River with it. He could drive the crap outta that boat and just laugh the whole way. I loved that guy. |
