I was a ADBA member back in the early 80's and lost all my tapes and pic's in home fire. If anyone knows were I could find some I would be grateful.

This is a great topic, so I thought I'd go through some of my old drag boat magazines and scan in some of the old pics. Duane, you have seen a lot of the stuff that I have, so its about time we had some fun and shared some of it. Todays 'Who is it' is attached. Sorry for the poor quality picture, the old magazine is a little tired! Look out for more each day (if I get time!) and let's test your memories from the 60s-70s-80s.......first correct answer gets a free beer when you come down under from me!

I'm gonna say that's Ted Faggart even though it would have been a little bit before my time, I know he did drive a flatbottom in his early days and the boat in the picture looks like it has the number 387 on it. David |

I have a picture of what I think is that boat from Oakland in 1973, it was a red metalflake Hondo XH511T with a fuel injected GMC engine. I was 12 years old and had my dads old brownie camera that took these funky 126mm? rolls of film. My favorite boat was Dago's Down & Out TFH. It was an amazing sight for me that I will never forget. I liked boat racing before but that race, the APBA nationals sealed the deal. I have been a complete drag boat nut since that weekend. |

Well David, you win the beer for today! That is Ted Faggart competing at the 'Chief Satiacum Open' way back in '79. The boat was a Cole, engine built by Jerry Dorman, 510 GMC, Unblown Gas Flat.
Well lets make it a little harder for todays ' Guess Who'! Same prize, first correct entry accepted. |

Thats Kenny Gibbs in the California Heatwave UGH. Wes Wanger boat looked very similar all black no other colors, but it was a newer Kurtis 500. I remember Wes towed his boat with a class C motorhome, both of these guys ran real strong in the class. Gibbs was before Wanger, late 70's to early 80's and Wanger was mid 80's when he ran.

The guy on the Left is none other then the infamous Mark "photo mark" McG.... You gotta love the Sea and Ski glasses he was wearing. The only other guy that I can remember that wore those was the great Kyle Walker....That is another story in it's self...Will tell that one later..... Nice picture Mark....Jt

Here's today's 'Guess who'. We know the boat is called 'Crisis' a BFH from the late 60's, but who are the two gentlemen holding the jacket and who is at the wheel of the boat in this picture? Can anyone name that guy holding the paper in the above picture beside the actual person?

Oaky, you all have had 2007 to answer the question and it is now 2008 so I will....
The guy on the left is Bob Peterson, the guy with the paper is Jimmy Todd, (a very young and skinny Jimmy Todd), the 3rd guy is Doug "Hollywood" Anderson and finally, Greg "Stunt Dog" Smith....WHat do they all have in common? IHBA Rescue....
This was taken at the IHBA awards banquet and I think the year was January 1992.....Wow, how time flies when you are having fun....
Great memories with all of these guys and with a little luck, some future memories to come...An anouncement forthcoming..!!!!
Thanks Gary for posting this photo.....Jimmy

The answer to the 'Crisis' BFH question is; the two guys are from left, Sam Kurtovich, and the fellow on the right is Gino Boscariol. The boat was owned by Don Neal and Gino and had several drivers. One was Sam, Gary Gabelich drove the boat to its first 200mph pass, the gentlemen driving in the picture was Ted Holden, who crashed the boat in Oregon in 1970, unfortunatly losing his life.
Heres todays 'guess who'....... |

OK, time to put you all out of your misery and give the answer.
It is Robert Debord driving 'Dazed and Confused' at ski land in April 1982. According to the magazine where this picture was taken from, his only competitor in the BFF class was none other than the great Dexter Tuttle driving a machine called 'Stranglehold'. |

The very first Dragboat race I went to was the spring opener in 1983 at Berenda reservior in Chowchilla Ca. We got there late and the very first boat I saw was Tom and June Ahrens Nitro Express with Dexter Tuttle driving. The announcer (the late great J.J. Johnson) said "this is a brand new piece, the first time in the water and it takes some long hair to get in one of these babies and mash on the loud pedal". I was standing about ankle deep in the water near the tree on the spectator's side and had no idea what to expect. When he got the boat set I swear I had never seen so much water in the air before. When he shifted the boat to high gear I started backing up from the water and when he went by me in the lights I fell backwards on my ass in a couple inches of water in complete shock and amazement When the rooster tail settled I hear J.J. come on the P.A and he says "how bout that for the first pass on a brand new boat, 223.32 MPH. I can remember it like it was yesterday, and it gives me goose bumps just thinking about it. Needless to say, I have been a Dragboat fan ever since, and a Huge Dexter Tuttle fan. It wasn't 4 months later that my first Flatbottom V-Drive was sitting in the garage...David |

all of the old pics remind me of my first ever drag boat race at firebird when Eddie Hill became the fastest with a 222.22 mph in an open boat, I was reading that Eddie Hill survived the highest speed crash ever recorded of a propeller-driven boat at 217.91 MPH with an E.T. of 5.24 seconds. dose anyone know if that record still stands? and is he the only one to out do the asphaly guys (as far as faster et) or has someone lese done that too? brings back memories For IHBA Rescue Sponsorship Package
