Gaylord (Moonbeam) Wethered!! I seen him strolling around the pits at Firebird a couple years back. He drove a few different boats back then. I used to work on a fueler called Mr. Ken that he drove a few times in the mid 80's.

He's also memorably quoted on one of the Hot Boat videos as saying that drag boat racing is better than sex!

I have openly and consistently maintained that it (drag boat racing) is them most fun you can have with your clothes ON!

Guess it's all dependent on who you're hangin' with!

What course ?
What year ?

i would have to say that he mooned the last time in MR. KEN i know he drove it in pheonix in 85 or 86. if i remeber correctly the boat never wanted to take a set right.   but then again when bob burns and brad tuttle drove our boats they never made bad moves and gaylord had hadling problems in ours so it could be the driver

Yes Padgett you are correct Mr Ken 1986 Phoenix Color red that thing was wild and way worthy of a mooning > And yes that is Bob Burroughs in Plumb Crazy however I did not know that used to be the Nitro Bandit, thanks for that info . That photo was taken by the late Monty Chandler . I am saddened to say for those of you who may not know that Bob Burroughs passed away of lung cancer 3 or so years ago .

Actually, he got the nickname before the Mr. Ken days. I'm trying to remember the owners name, but the boat was the Red Barron. The boat rarely made it past half track, so Gaylord would work the crowd with a little moonin'.

Ken Shmudlach bought the Nitro Bandit from Bud Cornelious who bought it from Tuttle. Burroughs drove it for Kenny at Puddingstone.

That picture is of him and Tom Black racing each other.(I think) Burroughs had it won and lifted before the finish. He thought he was there already. It would have been Ken's first win in BFH

Eddie, If my memory serves me correct Burroughs did win. When Gaylord got it up on 2 wheels he never let out of it. We ended up kicking the rods and Plump Crazy coasted thru befor we did. Also, it was Gaylord driving, Tom didnt start driving for the Old Man until 88' and the boat had a capsule then.

Huh, I didn't know there was a fourth 'cage' boat. I know Final Effort, Hillbilly and Madness all ran with the roll cage just prior to the enclosed capsules, with Ron's being the only one designed to exit the boat in a crash. His cage had it's own parachute and floatation while I think the other two were built into the hull. The one in the picture (Plum Crazy) looks like Rons but I don't see any floatation, so I guess it was bolted in to stay? Does anybody know the story on that one and were there any other cages out there? Not asking like a quiz-type question, cuz I don't know, just wondering.

The other caged boat was the one in the picture. Mr. Ken (previous Nitro Bandit) with Burroghs driving. I was off a year
on T.B. driving the Final effort I guess. I just remember being at puddingstone with the boat and losing. Could have been another race.

I can remember Kenny installing the cage and I thought, what a bad idea!! It's like throwing an egg through a screen door.shakehead

Eddie you are so right Rod Alexander and I used to call them cheese graters . And as far as that Tall Paul call Take a good look  that dude is shorter and way more stocky than Paul . That was like the shake down driver before the sale . So what I am getting at is I do not know who the driver is on that pass . However I would love to find out who was shoeing that deal .

Saved! good pic of Rod driving one of Tim's C&H's. Funny thing is, I bought my first hydro from Rod, a C&H. We never raced in BGH, but we did mix it up a couple times in BAH.

I'm going to try and post some pic's from Irvine Lake BFH. Don't know about the clarity.
Dave Nolte driving the Liberty BFH out front of the Texan. That didn't happen to often in that era. I think the other pic is of Jimmy Wright in Nitro Fever. If anyone knows different, let me know.

I was gonna say something about the rollers in the first picture, but that wouldn't be accurate. Rollers that big would roll over themselves and actually break near the shoreline, and I believe that would make them waves, not rollers.

Holy smokes, that's some big water!

i just read through all these postings, its crazy how far dragboat racing has come, shovel nose, so hydro's, no capsules, roll cages of death, to a full capsule with breathing and everything.  I have been going to races since before i couuld remember, then we moved and didnt go for a few years.  I have heard from several people that eddie hill tried to drive an aluminum hull tfh in the mid 80's, is that true?  that seems pretty crazy

I was with my father at a race on the Feather river near Oroville CA. and saw BFH Citation run 168mph.  No one could believe it. I think it was 1965 ,66 , or 67.  They later crashed hurting the driver, but he survived.  They found the motor.  Put it Panic Mouse BFF and crashed in the lites at around 130mph at Lake Natomas right in front of us.  They pulled the driver out on the shore by us.  He laid there for awhile with a bloody nose and then went back to the pits. Talk about tough.  I don't know if it was Ray C. or not.

anyone have a picture of Al Bush in the blacks express? I know he spanked Eddie Hill in Waco long ago but had the red light thrown in his lane. I think I have the paper article where he said he would never come back to Waco due to having the red light thrown in his lane.
