Tony sounds like all the clubs better learn to pull together before drag boat races are dead country wide.

I spoke with Dennis Saturday, VP fuels my not be at Phoenix with nitro for the fuel boats, something about insurance, Homeland Security, the track is on a Indian reservation, IHBA was not included with the NHRA contract. Thats where it gets fuzzy....a big problem needs to get worked out or their will not be any Nitro Boats at the first Phoenix Show.....can anybody fill some of the BLANKS...?

I thought this year would be the conclusion of the 4 year contract the IHBA had for Chowchillia.

That is all I have heard too, Homeland security has found a new way to make more money by cracking down on the sale of Nitro. I am sure it will be resolved before the first race.

That's two major races lost by IHBA this year, what's going on?

We all know it's how you word things and I am probably not doing a very good job writing this post correctly; however, there were not two races lost by the IHBA.

The IHBA has two less races this year due to the fact the promoters pulled the plug. If the races were lost by the IHBA that would mean some other association would be the sanctioning body!tongue

I.E. the ADBA lost High Point and replaced the race date with one in Gadsden.

There will be replacment races next year, to short of time this year to "get er dunn"!smilewinkgrin

Ya All act like this is new news?

It was pretty much done when Bob was no longer the Chowchilla Lions Club President.

Thank you all for the kind words.blush  It has been quite an experience.

There is a cancelation clause in the contract to which either party may choose to excercise.

The Lions club is under new leadership and is pursuing different paths.  They may choose not to host a boat race this next year, and they may abandon it completely.

My own personal opinion , if the races go away I feel it is due to the direction the club is going.  I wouldn't pass blame on CF/IHBA.

However, I wouldn't rule out Drag Boat Races here, they just may take a break.  But then again who knows?

BTW Jeff, I still have your hose!

John, I'll be up your way on Monday next week, maybe we can have a Starbucks Coffee!  You do have Starbucks in your part of the galaxy don't you?

I wish everyone a Great Holiday Season as well a rested Off Season

I recieved a call from Hydroman this afternoon asking me if there was anything I could do as a "local" to solve this problem. I realized several months ago there were some problems between CF and the Lions (remember CF is wearing two hats in Chow he is the owner of the sanctioning body and the promoter, which might be doable if he lived next door). The Lions like any social club have membership changes and interest changes. For many years I have been vocal about the benifiits to the community, something that is difficult for Lions club members to understand as to my knowledge none of them own a business that is directly affected by the race. I have owned a business and here is the actual numbers this is from memory but the books are in my shop is there is doubt my Mini Mart Store sales  in june would average 800 thur 1100 fri 900 sat 800 sun on race weekend I have had very often three times and some four times  income in the same period back then we are at 31% average mark up in the store, the race is a BIG deal to every service business in town. There is another side to the coin the Lions are the hardest working bunch of "will work for food and beer" guys you have ever seen. The city manager can almost mention a project that she would like done and zap the concrete is in the toilets flush you name it it is done. Sooooo when you run into city halll and bad mouth the Lions you have opened mouth and inserted foot. As many of you know in 1998 the Lions said they had too many events on thier schedule and canceled the drag boat races. I have know Whiskey River since the early 70"s when we both raced MX so he asked me if I could help get the stalled event back on track. Which I did and IQ continued to promote the event untill there was just no respect left on either side. I'm too old, the kids are to busy, we are involved in two race cars, my flat bottom is ready for the motor, to take a run at this event again. I have made some calls and it appears there is not just one problem. Now what can YOU do to bring a race to what I feel is one of the safest tracks you race on. Number one there is a group that benifits, motels, resturants, mini marts, bars, bars (oh I said bars twice guess I like bars) That may friends is your targets, this is not a big town if someone would take a moment to post the ph numbers of all the  business's (5 resturants, 3 bars, 3 motels, 4 mini marts) , the city hall, and the chamber office and everyone start calling I think this will get moving. Good Luck the family misses drag boat racing and will help in any way we can. Howard

recieved another round of calls The lions seem to have not only the exclusive right to be the benifical non profit from any boat racing event at the lake, they also seem to have the exclusive right to decide if there is or is not a race. Other non profits have approched the city manager and have been advised this is a "political issue" what ever that means. I can tell you I solved it very simply the last this occured $$,$$$.$$ to the city and chamber and the race was on.

I am just as perplexed as the rest of you. I was told by several Lions Board Members, that the boardhad decided not to host any more drag boat races period. This should have opened the door for other service clubs to step up.

I have left several telephone messages (5) with the city administrator, but as of today
she has yet to return any of them.

I have been out of town doing my Day Job, but I am back in for the rest of this week. I'll go see a council member friend of mine and see what's up.
I'll also talk with some other service club officials.

In the mean time, Howard knows who else needs to contacted.

The time table needed to put on a race for June hasnt passed yet, but it is getting close.

Have a great day.
Bob

Well if we do end up losing this race in the long run, what about opening up San Diego race to all racers? It doesnt give us another race but at least it might give us racers another California race to race that other wise might not have had the chance to attend. just a thought

This could be an option if it was not part of the regatta. Since this is a joint race with the other forms of boat racing our allotment of time to run is zilch. I calculated the time last year and posted it I will go look to repost here but the time they slotted for us was something like 6 hours for the whole weekend to run 80 boats, 2 rounds test and tune on Friday, two rounds of qualifying on Saturday and the Eliminations on Sunday.

Many do not realize that Charlie pulled this off in such small windows of race time. I personal commend Charlie for his accomplishing the race with this type of time allotment.turn It was a true team play by all to get it done.

It is something to consider but I don’t think there is much that can be done to change the time allotment. Maybe a new race course in San Diego would help! Let’s hope the plans go through! smilewinkgrin

There needs to be a joint deal with NJBA or CDBA for a race. Not many more options available or you need to make a serious push for Irvine Lakeidea

The sad part is I had a hydro set up at the march meet at Fomoso to help promote the race. And had a video set up of Gils crashes showing for 3 days and giving out 5 buck discount coupons for the upcoming Chowchilla race. We all need to call the city manager and or the mayor and give our support for bringing $$$$$$ to the Chowchilla businesses.

Well I just called and cancelled my room, when I was asked why I told them that the lions club said no race and the city leadership said ok not concerned about the revenue that will bring to their hotel. Needless to say it peeked their interest to contact the parties involved.

Well I don't have a list yet but we should probally find one and circulate it to all.

How many of you have rooms booked already and how many rooms for how many days?

I had 2 rooms for 3 nights @ $129 per night

Im sure the hotel is pissed Duane. Seeing as they raised there rates 50% just for this event were really gonna shove deep inside and break it off. Now they are gonna have to get back to real business at $69 per night and no 3 night minimum. Id be scrambling to reach the powers that be too!

The area code for Chowchilla is 559   NOT   209.

Also thier is a Chowchilla council meeting on April 14 at 7:00 pm next Monday night location is 130 S 2nd . Public has an opportunity to speak at the beginning of the meeting to express your thoughts on the good to the community for having a race.We need as many people thier to represent IHBA and racers and maybe make a offer to donate $$$ from the racers or boat manufactures to a non profit orginazation. If we lost the race this year we may never get it back. So any racers or crew that can be thier we can give them our opinion.

Here is a email I fired off to the mayor and all the city council members when I heard the news of cancellation and their response.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments. As City staff, we understand the frustrations from many spectators/participants regarding the news on the drag boat races. The City does not want to see the cancellation of this event either; we are extremely sensitive to the weak economy and realize how the economy is stimulated annually during race time.

However, unfortunately, this is not the City’s decision – this is between IHBA and the Chowchilla Lions Club. We are not privy to contract details, therefore, we cannot comment on that.

I did make contact with the Lions Club to inform them of emails and calls we are receiving and I was given a contact name and number to pass on to others. Anyone with concerns or questions can contact Lions Club President Varley Fitch at 559-665-4710.

Again, thank you for taking the time to write us. We do hope issues may be resolved for this event so it can continue in Chowchilla in the future.

Sincerely,

Subject: lions club /parks and recreation

Dear Sir or Madam,  I was reading today that the Lions Club has chosen not to honor it's contract with the International Hot Boat Association to present the Chowchilla Super Nationals Drag Boat event in June of 2008. I was extremely distressed to hear such news! I have attended this event both as a spectator and as a participant for many years. My son's grew up going to this event and were supposed to compete this year. I had setup a dozen family's to attend the event including staying at the local hotels and RV parks. Needless to say, we were prepared to throw out thousands to the local economy.  I am sure that I was not the only one planning this type of participation, as several of my competitors were in similar situations. I guess I just do not understand how a city can eliminate those kinds of funds flooding the local business for a weekend with the struggling economic situation of California as it exist. This has to be one of the premier events for which this city is known for. If not, then it should have been and it was never promoted correctly. Check with the City of Red Bluff to find out what it does for their area. Call and try to book a room close to the area and you will witness first hand what type of crowd it's drawing. That converts to revenue.... The City's leadership should encourage the event to help promote local business, potential City revenue and notoriety. It's a no lose situation. I hope they may take a second look and reconsider their options. Thank you for letting me voice my opinions.

Sincerely,

Gary  Bauer

Hello everyone. TopWop/Bruce Pedretti here.

Wanted to post the outcome of the Chowchilla City Council meeting.
Dave Lipinski, Jim Dunn, and myself were the only dragboat people there. One business owner in favor of not cancelling the race(Owns the RV Park) No Lions club members were present.
The city is going to look into promoting the race. Council members sound supportive. Time will tell. Supposed to have an answer by the end of the week.

It's not dead yet...

Take care,

thanks bob. now that the on-again, off-again, is on-again (at least for the moment), is the city going to take any steps to assure that this isn't a recurring theme? you know me, and this is nothing personal, but it seems to me that a "frivolous" attitude exists with regard to an event that can be of significant economic benefit to the community.
the sense i'm getting is that "racers complained, so let's go ahead and open our sandbox so they can come play". so i'm supposed to feel grateful now that the city has deigned to open their doors, so i can make a 1000 mile round trip, spend hundreds in the community and race.
taking the whole thing into consideration, to me this is disrespectful to the sanctioning body AND THE RACERS. chowchilla is not providing any more a "favor" to the organization/racers than the organization/racers are for chowchilla.
if the city were to seriously commit and promote this event, there is no telling how big and beneficial to the community it could be. they should take their cues from red bluff, marble falls, augusta, san diego, that commit to these events and promote on a year round basis. how can the city effectively promote this when they're still noncommital 2 months prior?

you know, i enjoy being there, enjoy racing there. but i don't enjoy the feeling of not being wholeheartedly wanted; that's disrespect.

i apologize for unloading, and i do not speak for anyone else. but this is how i feel after all this yo-yo'ing, and i do hope that the city takes a closer look at this both before and after the next event.

the sense i'm getting is that "racers complained, so let's go ahead and open our sandbox so they can come play". so i'm supposed to feel grateful now that the city has deigned to open their doors, so i can make a 1000 mile round trip, spend hundreds in the community and race.
taking the whole thing into consideration, to me this is disrespectful to the sanctioning body AND THE RACERS. chowchilla is not providing any more a "favor" to the organization/racers than the organization/racers are for chowchilla.
if the city were to seriously commit and promote this event, there is no telling how big and beneficial to the community it could be. they should take their cues from red bluff, marble falls, augusta, san diego, that commit to these events and promote on a year round basis. how can the city effectively promote this when they're still noncommital 2 months prior?

you know, i enjoy being there, enjoy racing there. but i don't enjoy the feeling of not being wholeheartedly wanted; that's disrespect.

i apologize for unloading, and i do not speak for anyone else. but this is how i feel after all this yo-yo'ing, and i do hope that the city takes a closer look at this both before and after the next event.

BP...Don't worry about it.Its going to happen !!!

Bob I understand exactly how you feel.  I'm a citizen in this community and until you hit them (the city council) in the pocketbook nobody is concerned.  I do know that the communications breakdown of why the race is or isn't going to happen starts with the IHBA and Lions club's  ongoing contract issue.  I can't say this is CF's way to try and get around the "Breech of Contract" issue with the Lions Club, BUT.....if the city takes over and he still gets to put on the race who is going to make the money?????
I want to see the race happen and be successful.  When the Lions club started putting on this race they made a lot of money for the local projects they sponsor.  I want them to continue to make money. The racers are the reason this location has been and will continue to be successful. Lets hope things work out for the best.

If we stop having races at Berenda Reservoir with all of the development that has taken place we may never get the chance to start up again.

Now everyone remember: "THIS IS JUST MY OPINION" and yes I know what opinions are considered to be....Because I have been called that in the past and undoubtedly will be called that again in the future.

Take care

In all honesty, there had been talks behind closed doors for quite sometime.
Depending on which Lions Board Member you speak to, they arent interested, then they are , and back-n-forth for quite sometime.

It really didnt come to a head until certain business peple and racers, and locals started asking pointed questions.

Bob, I am not at liberty just now to be more specific. However, I believe, that once this is settled, that any recurrance of this Tug-O-War will no longer exist.

I have been kept in the loop, however I have not been asked to give any input or guidance. So we'll just have to wait and see.
Something will happen very soon.

Have a great day.

I dont know what to tell you.  I inquired yesterday and I was told that it is a City of Chowchilla Parks & Rec. situation and that I do not need to get involved.

I am at a lost.  I actually thought I had a better repoire with these people.  I learned something.

I guess you guys are on your own, I appologize incase my actions may hurt the overall situation.

Best of Luck.
Bob

bob, i seriously doubt that anything you say or do could have further impact on whether or not this happens.  in the corporate world, a dedicated and hard working vice president can be in good standing one day, and escorted out the door the next without having the option of packing his personal items - happens all the time.   at the end of the day, it's up to the chowchilla decision makers to either utilize what could be significantly beneficial to the community, or not.

I just spoke with the IHBA today when I renewed my membership for the year.  I was told that they are waiting for the city of Chowchilla to get back with them and should have a definite answer if the race is a go within the next week...

Bob P. I read your post and wholeheartedly agree with what you wrote.  Every year its a big fiasco rather the race is a go or not. As you stated they should be promoting this race all year long for the financial gain to their community.  Ive stated for years that they need to promote the race on bay area radio stations instead if all the little hick towns... The bay area is where the money is at with alot of race fans.

Lion Bob, your still the man and if the city had any sense they would hire you to handle the city's end to put on this race.  Based on the condition of their fairgrounds its no surprise to me that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing in that city...  If the race is a go you will be treated like the VIP that you are in my pit and I'm sure many more...  BTW don't forget my lavender hose...
